Launched in 2008, the new IFPA World Pinball Championship had one primary goal . . . invite the best players from all around the globe to battle it out for a chance at the World Pinball Champion title.
This event had been limited to 64 players since it was started. During the 2007 qualifying season the IFPA sanctioned 309 events with roughly 2500 players competing around the globe for these 64 spots.
Twelve years later, if we look at the 2019 qualifying season that was used to determine the 64 spots for the IFPA17 World Pinball Championship, there’s no doubt that the landscape of competitive pinball has expanded greatly. The IFPA sanctioned 7591 events during the season, with over 24,000 players actively competing that season.
We are excited to announce that starting with the IFPA18 World Pinball Championship (scheduled for Germany in 2023), the IFPA World Pinball Championship field will expand to 80 players.
We will continue to offer two Country Exemption spots for each eligible country. We will also continue to reserve one spot for the 2022-23 IFPA North American Pinball Championship and one spot for the 2022-23 IFPA European Pinball Championship. These satellite spots will be open for any player ranked in the World Pinball Player Rankings as of the end of 2022 that did not qualify for the IFPA World Pinball Championship through the automatic bid process.
As part of this expansion, the IFPA is also excited to announce that a spot will be reserved for the highest finisher at the IFPA Women’s World Pinball Championship who did not qualify for the IFPA World Pinball Championship through the automatic bid process.

April 2nd update . . .
No joking here, this change will be happening! With this field expansion the IFPA is excited to give President Josh Sharpe a lower cut-line to chase, which hopefully makes his chances of qualifying a bit easier.
In just a few short days, February 27th, 2022 will mark the 16 year anniversary since the rebirth of the International Flipper Pinball Association.
On that day in 2006 the AMOA assigned the rights of the then defunct IFPA over to Steve Epstein and Roger Sharpe to see if they could elevate the awareness and visibility of pinball across the globe.
The World Pinball Player Rankings now has over 84,000 players from 42 countries and over 37,000 sanctioned events in the system.
Thanks to everyone for the continued support, but most importantly to the hundreds of volunteers that help the IFPA truly cover the globe in competitive pinball 24/7. We’re looking forward to seeing where we can take things in the years ahead!

INDISC 2022 Video Announcement HERE.
The official sanctioning of events for WPPR points resumes August 1.
Congratulations to Christian Holmsten for getting the silver ball rolling with the first sanctioned event: a midnight frenzy tournament in Borås, Sweden.
As the IFPA resumes sanctioning, we support tournament and league directors in taking any precautions they deem appropriate to make their events safe for attendees and for their communities at large. This includes requiring that participants are vaccinated and show proof of vaccine status, subject to local regulations. Look to guidance from local health officials, the World Health Organization (WHO), and national bodies like the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Any health and safety guidelines should be included in event announcements so that expectations are clear well in advance, and all participants are expected to abide by them. This remains a stressful and uncertain time for many of us, so be respectful of organizers, venue owners, and fellow competitors.
We recognize that the pandemic is an ongoing and fluid situation with an impact that varies across different regions of the world. The IFPA continues to monitor the global situation with input from our country directors and provincial/state representatives, and the decision to resume sanctioning is subject to change.
The IFPA offers itself as a resource for anyone interested in organizing or attending events. Please reach out to us with any questions. Be safe, be kind, and have fun!
