Tournament Overview

Tournament Date: November 05, 2022

Waterland's monthly double matchplay pinball tournament is held over 4 or 5 rounds depending upon the number of players. Each 3-player or 4-player group will play a bank of two machines in each round. Semi-finals will follow the same format with two groups of 4 players playing two banks of two machines. Finals will use a quad matchplay (multi-matchplay) format in which the final four players play a group of 4 machines. Scoring is 7, 5, 3, 1 for 4-player games and 7, 4, 1 for 3-player games.

This tournament is structured to generate the maximum possible WPPRs (world ranking points) if 8 or more players participate.

The buy-in is $5 per player. Waterland splashes the pot with $25! All of the pot will be paid out in prizes to the top 4 players.

Waterland pays each player's $1 IFPA fee, so that the pot is not reduced.

This tournament will be held on the first Saturday of each month, unless there is a conflict, in which case an alternate date will be selected if possible.

QUALIFYING

Qualifying consists of 4 or 5 rounds of double matchplay depending upon the number of players.

If there are 16 or more players or if 4-player groups outnumber 3-player groups: 4 rounds

If there are 15 or fewer players and 4-player groups do not outnumber 3-player groups: 5 rounds

If there are 8 to 15 players, then the top 4 finishers from the qualifying rounds will advance directly to the finals.
If there are 16+ players, then the top 8 advance to the semi-finals.

In double matchplay, each round consists of multiple groups of 3 or 4 players, with each group playing a bank of two games simultaneously using the same group of players for both games.

The idea is to keep both machines in each bank busy so that two games will not take much longer to play than if only a single game were played.

Each game will award 7, 5, 3, or 1 points to 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place respectively. In 3-player groups, the points will be 7, 4, or 1 for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.

SEMI-FINALS

If there are 16 or more players, then there will be an 8-player semi-finals which will be divided into two 4-player groups seeded according to placement in the qualifying rounds.

In this round, each 4-player group will play a double matchplay round on a bank of 2 machines. The top 2 finishers from each group will advance to the finals.

The top qualifying player will choose which bank of machines their group will play from among those offered by the tournament director. The other group of 4 will play the other bank.

FINALS

The finals will consist of a 4-player multi-matchplay (quad matchplay) round.
The top qualifying player will choose a bank of 4 games from among the banks offered by the tournament director.

POST FINALS

If semi-finals were skipped due to fewer than 16 players participating, then the top two players from finals will participate in one last post-finals round.

This round will consist of a head-to-head best-of-3 series between the top 2 finishers from the finals round.

Each player chooses a machine and is first player on that machine. The other player is player 2. These first two games will be played simultaneously.

If a third game is necessary, that game will be randomly drawn.

Each player receives a single veto which allows a randomly drawn game to be rejected. For the first randomly drawn game, the player who placed second in finals must decide whether or not to veto before the player who placed first in finals decides.

If a game is rejected, another game will be randomly drawn. Only the player with a remaining veto may vote on the second randomly drawn game.

If both vetoes are used, then the third randomly drawn game will be the one that is played.
Top finisher from the finals round chooses player order on the third game.

NOTES

The following numbers of players ensure that the number of 4-player groups exceeds the number of 3-player groups.
8, 11, 12, 15, 16, 18, 19, 20, 22+

The following numbers of players do not ensure that the number of 4-player groups exceeds the number of 3-player groups.
9, 10, 13, 14, 17, 21

In the unlikely event that fewer than 8 players show up, we'll cancel the double matchplay tournament and play a casual tournament using the players' choice of format. In this case, only the top 3 players will share the pot.

CREDITS

The double matchplay format was dreamt up as a point maximizing enhancement to regular group matchplay by Ashley Weaver of South Sound Pinball.
